About Me

Hi everyone and welcome to my Memorial Page here on my SwanSong.  It would be great if my family and friends could take the time to remember me, by sharing stories and memories of my life, and that over time, it provides comfort and a great place to visit.  I also hope the other resources provided within my Memorial Page also help you all remember me fondly.  Take care everyone

Testimonials

Mary was born on the 18th January 1947, the second child of James and Janet Carter, younger sister of Norman and older sister to Rebecca, in Bath. Life in post-war Britain was hard, as it was for most, but Mary was born into a very close and loving family, living the first 10 years of her life in Archibald Street, before the family moved to Albion Road in the city. James’ work as a Manager at a local textile factory provided for the family, allowing Mary’s moth Janet to spend time bringing up the children, cooking and providing a safe and secure home for them all. Holiday’s to Cornwall and Wales were regular and provided great memories for Mary, captured in some photos which were among Mary’s most treasured possessions.

School was a pleasure for Mary and her siblings, firstly at the North Avenue School and then later at the Golden Green School in the city. Mary excelled academically and also at sport, in which she was a keen runner and netball player, representing the town and county at both, with a knee injury curtailing and further recognition. Mary also had a keen interest in stamp collecting, amassing a total of over 3,000 stamps, including some rare editions within her collection.

On leaving school, Mary first went to work with her father James in the textile factory, and was quickly promoted into the Senior Accounts team, showing off her numeracy and financial skills. It was this skill that got her noticed by a key customer, who offered Mary a post as an Accountant at their London HQ. Leaving Bath was a hard decision, but on moving to a new flat in Kensington, it was not long before she met John Doe, a Senior Partner at the Accountancy, and they quickly fell in love. Marriage followed within 12 months, and it was not long after that Mary and John were blessed with the birth of Jimmy (named after her father), and soon after, four more children, Mary, Peter, Polly and Jessica.

Mary and John were fabulous parents, and James and Janet (and John’s parents, Michael and Cybil) fantastic grandparents. James and John visited London often to see their grandchildren, despite illness, and Mary was extremely sad at losing both her parents so close a few years after Jessica was born.

Family holidays provided highlights for the family throughout, and John’s work allowed Mary to retire early and spend time with their children, and also the welcome addition of 7 grandchildren – Sophie, James, Paul, Paula, Noel, Clint and Della.

Mary and John retired to Tenerife, where they lived in beautiful cottage by the sea, and were often visited by their wonderful family and friends.”
